Google’s Pixel Unveil: What to Expect at the Made-by-Google Event

The main presentation kicks off tonight at 7 PM, and you can find all the new announcements on computerbild.de. However, much is already known, thanks in part to Google itself. Over the past few weeks, the Californians have not only teased the new hardware but also openly communicated their intentions: a direct assault on Apple’s iPhone.

Early Presentation to Counter Apple

The timing alone is a statement against Apple: instead of October, like with the previous Pixel 8, Google is showcasing its Pixel innovations to the public two months earlier this year. The strategy is to avoid being overshadowed by the iPhone 16 launch in September. Meanwhile, Google’s teaser videos have been relentless in targeting the iPhone. The message: the iPhone is just an “Old Phone,” especially lagging in AI capabilities. It’s time to pass the baton to a phone with more energy – the new Pixel series. And quite a bit is already known about it.

Four Pixel Models for the First Time

For the first time, Google appears to be introducing four new Pixel phones simultaneously – much like Apple. The Pixel 9 is confirmed, and official videos have already revealed the Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro Fold. This was somewhat expected, as last year saw the release of the Pixel 8 Pro and a Pixel Fold. However, a genuine surprise was the unveiling of the first XL model of the Pixel 9 Pro, aptly named Pixel 9 Pro XL. Not only are there images, but there’s also a detailed hands-on video available online (in Ukrainian, with an option for English subtitles). Interestingly, Google is reportedly dropping its historically successful Pixel-a model this time around. Given the now affordable Pixel 8, the Pixel 8a seems less sensible in comparison.

Overview of the Pixel 9 Series

Rumors already provide a clear picture of the display sizes in the Pixel series, although not all sources agree on the exact decimal points:

  • Pixel 9: 6.3 inches (possibly 6.24 inches?), 2424×10780 pixels, 1,870 nits
  • Pixel 9 Pro: 6.3 inches (possibly 6.34 inches?), 2856×1280 pixels, 2,050 nits
  • Pixel 9 Pro XL: 6.8 inches (possibly 6.73 inches?), 2992×1344 pixels, 2,050 nits
  • Pixel 9 Pro Fold: Details are still scarce, but the predecessor featured a 7.6-inch foldable display
