Apple Watch Ultra 2 Updated with New Color and Features, No Ultra 3 Announcement
At its highly anticipated September 2024 iPhone event, Apple broke with tradition by not unveiling a new generation of the Apple Watch Ultra. Instead of launching the Apple Watch Ultra 3, Apple introduced an upgraded version of the Apple Watch Ultra 2 with a sleek new color and band, alongside several improvements brought by the latest watchOS 11.
The most striking change to the Ultra 2 is the new satin black finish. Apple stated that this sophisticated look was achieved using a specialized “custom blasting process” and a “diamond-like carbon physical vapor deposition,” giving the smartwatch a robust yet polished appearance. Along with the updated finish, a new titanium Milanese loop band has been introduced. This band, inspired by the mesh used by professional divers, is crafted from corrosion-resistant titanium, making it ideal for water-related activities such as scuba diving. Apple also emphasized its ongoing environmental efforts, noting that the Ultra 2 is constructed from 95% recycled grade 5 titanium, contributing to its goal of becoming carbon neutral.
In addition to the aesthetic changes, the Ultra 2 will benefit from new software enhancements via watchOS 11. Some of the key features include sleep apnea alerts, an upgraded Vitals app for health tracking, and a Tides app, which provides real-time tidal forecasts and conditions for various water sports. Another convenient improvement is the ability to play audio directly from the watch’s built-in speakers, allowing users to enjoy music, podcasts, or other audio content without needing to connect to headphones or another device. These software features will also be available on the newly announced Apple Watch Series 10, which debuted at the event alongside the iPhone 16 and AirPods 4.
Pre-orders for the black titanium version of the Ultra 2, the new titanium Milanese loop band, and other updated bands are now open, with shipping scheduled to begin on September 20.
